Your CI, about
twice as fast.

Every job runs in its own virtual machine on fast bare-metal hardware. Change one line in your workflow; everything else stays the same.

Why Overline

Your workflows, half the wait.

Overline replaces the machine your jobs run on and nothing else. Same steps, same actions, same caches, on hardware that's simply faster.

One line to switchSee the benchmarks
Speed01

About twice as fast

The same CI jobs finish in about 40% less time: 178s against 285s on GitHub's runners.

Compatibility02

Drop-in compatible

The same Ubuntu 24.04 toolset as GitHub's runners, Docker included.

Startup03

Starts in seconds

Machines boot before your job arrives; it's running about five seconds after it's queued.

Visibility04

See inside every job

Live logs and per-second CPU and memory for every step.

Isolated by design

Every job alone, and nothing left behind.

Each job gets a fresh virtual machine that's deleted when it ends. Jobs can't see each other, and the GitHub App can't read your code.

What that means

  • A fresh virtual machine per job, deleted when it ends.
  • No path between jobs, or to anything else on our servers.
  • Secrets go from GitHub straight to your job.
  • Three GitHub App permissions; none can read code.

Benchmarks

1.60× faster across 7 real projects.

Each project's own CI job, unchanged, run side by side on GitHub's 2 vCPU / 8 GB runner and on Overline's 2 vCPU / 8 GB virtual machine. Job time from first step to last.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

What people usually ask before switching.

How do I switch my workflows to Overline?

Install the Overline GitHub App on your organization, then change runs-on in a job to overline. That's the whole change; nothing else in the workflow needs to move.

Will my workflows run unchanged?

Yes. Jobs run on Ubuntu 24.04 with the same toolset as GitHub's runners: the preinstalled languages and tool cache, the apt packages workflows expect, and Docker. Actions like actions/cache keep working as they do on GitHub.

How much faster is it?

Across eight open-source projects' own CI jobs, Overline finished in 406 seconds against 741 seconds on GitHub's runners of the same size, 1.83 times faster. Jobs usually start about five seconds after they're queued.

What machine does my job get?

Every job gets its own virtual machine. runs-on: overline gives it 2 vCPUs and 8 GB of memory, overline-4vcpu 4 vCPUs and 16 GB, and overline-8vcpu 8 vCPUs and 32 GB.

Can you see my code or secrets?

No. The GitHub App's permissions don't include reading code, and GitHub sends secrets straight to the runner inside your job's machine, which is deleted when the job ends. The security page walks through every step.

Do public repositories work?

Yes. GitHub doesn't let public repositories use an organization's runners by default, so turn on “Allow public repositories” in your organization's runner group settings.

Can I use Overline on a personal account?

Not yet. Overline works with GitHub organizations today.
